Eggplant

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) belongs to the nightshade family Solanaceae and known for its edible fruit. It is related to chili, tomato and potato and typically used as vegetables in cooking. The plant is a perennial plant and is cultivated all year round.

Eggplant has nutritionally low in macronutrient and micronutrient content but the capacity to absorb oils and flavors is excellent. In the Philippines, it is one of the top fruiting vegetables being grown with around 21, 000 hectares of area planted. It is mainly used in dishes like pinakbet, tortang talong, ensaladang talong, eggplant steak and many more dishes.
