A note from Sophie Hane-Weijman – Head of Sustainability and Stewardship for EMEA

Product Stewardship is essential in promoting innovation by ensuring safe handling and proper application management, in order to protect the grower and the environment while optimizing the product’s benefits. Stewardship provides tools and guidance’s to growers; supporting good agricultural practices to bring a long-term sustainable solution.

sophie

OVERVIEW

STEWARDSHIP AND APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS

Stewardship of products containing Isoflex® active must be considered when handling, for application and use, as well as the long-term utility of the herbicide in the market.

The novel mode of action of Fundatis® herbicide, powered by Isoflex® active in cereal-cropping systems provides a new tool for herbicide resistance management in a segment with few remaining options. At the same time, off-target movement due to improper application can and should be avoided.

Another key feature of Fundatis® herbicide, powered by Isoflex® active is its residual activity, which can be beneficial to users for season-long management. However, a lack of understanding of the factors impacting soil activity may cause unexpected and unnecessary problems in succeeding crops.

The following guidance will provide mitigations to reduce or eliminate risks and support the sustainability of this product offering.

DRIFT MANAGEMENT

Particle droplet drift with products containing Fundatis® herbicide, powered by Isoflex® active can occur from misapplication. One of the factors that can increase the risk of drift is the application equipment – elevated boom height, nozzle type, high tractor speed and/or spray pressure.  Recommendation is to use spray equipment in line with manufacturer recommendations.

Another factor that can increase the risk of drift is environmental - high windspeed, heavy rainfall, low relative humidity, soil type, high temperatures and/or temperature inversion events present at the time of application.

It is important to mitigate drift to avoid direct sprayer application or indirect contact (such as spray drift) to non-target plants, non-target areas and open water courses (ponds, streams, rivers etc).

Top tips for applying Fundatis® herbicide powered by Isoflex® active this autumn to mitigate the chances of drift onto non target organisms

• Wind seed when spraying – aim for 1-2m/s or 3-6km/h

• Boom height – select the correct boom height for your chosen nozzle type and size

• Forward speed – maintain a forward speed between 8 and 10km/h

• Water volume – optimum water volume is 200L/ha

• Spray quality - course droplets pre-emergence and medium droplets post-emergence

CROP REPLACEMENT AND ROTATION

In prolonged dry conditions ploughing is recommended prior to planting of any subsequent crop.

Resistance Management

To effectively steward products powered by Isoflex® active and minimize the risk of resistance developing, the following must be considered;

  • Label application rates must be used
  • Avoid using Fundatis® or any other HRAC group 13 in the same field in successive seasons.
  • Use tank mixes or sequences of effective herbicides with different modes of actions within individual crops, or successive crops.
  • Maximize the use of cultural control measures wherever possible (e.g., crop rotation, ploughing, stale seedbeds, delayed drilling, etc.) to prevent and manage herbicide resistance.
  • Scout fields regularly and investigate reasons for suboptimal efficacy from the product.
  • Always follow HRAC guidelines for preventing and managing herbicide resistant weeds.

More details on recommendations to avoid drift can be found on the label.

Personal & Environmental Protection

As Good Agricultural Practices, when handling a product containing Fundatis® herbicide, powered by Isoflex® active protective clothing and equipment should be worn as per label instructions. At a minimum, product users and handlers should wear full-length clothing (pants and shirt), covered shoes or boots and chemical-resistant gloves.

The label provides Stewardship & Application Recommendations and should be followed to prevent drift outside the field of application, including to non-crop environments. Any spills of products containing Fundatis® herbicide, powered by Isoflex® active should be managed to prevent entry into waterways and cleanup material should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
