Mango Fruitfly
Mango fruitfly (Bactrocera philippinensis. B. dorsalis, B. occipitalis) Fruitflies are one of the major pests affecting the mango industry in the country that is abundant during the fruiting stage of the trees. B. philippinensis is endemic in the Philippines.
What are the symptoms
Punctures of mature female due to oviposition cause soft brownish spots on the skin of the fruit and underlying tissues
Internal feeding of larvae destroys large portions of the flesh which appears like brown to black lesion, making the fruit unsuitable for consumption
Impact to the crop
Severe infestation leads to dropping of the fruits on the ground and decay. The crop can be damaged for about 70%
How to control
√ Collection and burying of dropped infested fruits to inhibit insect development
√ Bagging of fruits at 55 DAFI and avoiding intercropping with alternate hosts like guava, papaya, or santol
√ Use of registered and recommended insecticides to control adults and larvae
√ Use of pheromone traps to attract adults
