Leaffolder (Diaphania)
Leaffolder (Diaphania indica /Saunders). One of the serious and widely distributed pests of cucurbits. Early instars move from one plant to another, while late instars are the most destructive and active feeders.
What are the symptoms
On cucurbits, young larvae feed on leaves and skeletonize them, while older larvae fold and web the leaves together and feed within.
Larvae are also observed feeding on flowers and boring into ovaries and maturing fruits.
Impact to the crop
Reduction in the quantity and quality of the yield if not controlled.
How to control
√ Crop hygiene and field sanitation and removal of infested plant parts.
√ Allow natural enemies like spiders, dragonflies, and braconid wasp species like Apanteles spp.
√ Chemical control using recommended insecticides and pheromone traps.
