Corn borer
Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis). Asian corn borer (ACB) is a lepidopteran pest and considered one of the most destructive pests of corn in the country.
What are the symptoms?
Early larval instars initially feed on young leaves up to the whorl at early and late vegetative stage resulting in pin-head,match-head or shot hole damage.
Third instar larvae starting to bore and feeds on the stalk usually on internodes.
Impact to the crop
Severe infestation of ACB may lead to the consumption of all plant parts.
How to control?
√ Use of Trichogramma parasitoids and other potential predators.
√ Use of resistant varieties and Bt corn hybrids
√ Cultural methos such as early planting, crop rotation, intercropping, sanitation, etc.
