Armyworm
Onion Armyworm (Spodoptera exigua) is a highly polyphagous lepidopteran pest of vegetables that causes significant damage and yield loss due to extensive direct feeding.
What are the symptoms
In onion, larvae cut leaves causing them to dry and eventually wilt; it also feeds on onion bulbs, boring and feeding inside leading to rotting and decay.
Impact to the crop
Infestation on fruits/bulbs leads to a decrease in the quality of the produce.
How to control
√ Flooding of the field prior to planting to kill the pupa present in the soil
√ Spraying of NPV (Nucleopolyhedrovirus) and Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) on newly hatched and young larvae as biological control agents
√ Manual collection of larva and light trapping of adults
√ Installation of sex pheromone baited traps and application of recommended insecticides
