The weed control on both grass and broadleaf weeds with Overwatch® Herbicide impressed agronomist Darren Pech, of Elders Jamestown, in the mid-north region of South Australia. Mr Pech said the region was a mixed farming area, which includes wheat, barley, oaten hay, canola, beans, vetch, lupins and field peas as well as pastures for sheep production. While ryegrass is the major weed farmers are chasing, there are other weeds, such as brome grass, bifora and milk thistle that are also of concern. “I think most growers would say that they're in a better position with ryegrass than they were 20plus years ago, through various mechanisms,” Mr Pech said. “But things like brome grass are starting to sneak in a little bit.” He said they looked at Overwatch® Herbicide in trials in the lead-up to commercial release in 2021 and used it with a number of farmer customers in the first year. “Our ryegrass control was solid,” he said. “It's performance on things like bifora and milk thistle was outstanding. It's obviously very, very hot on those sorts of weeds. There's some encouraging stuff there.” “Ten weeks residual was probably around the mark with the ryegrass but the effect on broadleaf weeds has been a lot longer. We’ve seen some effect right through the summertime on things like milk thistle which is highly sensitive to the herbicide.”
