A mix of beneficial species and insecticides, when necessary, work particularly well in controlling pests in forage brassicas. Dr Paul Horne of IPM Technologies talks about what factors such as pest populations, beneficial numbers and stage of crop which help determine the type and timing of an insecticide. “There are very few products that are totally safe to all beneficials and there's the older broad-spectrum insecticides, like synthetic pyrethroids, organo-phosphates, that in general, are very harsh on beneficial species. The newer products fall somewhere in between.”
