Grasshopper Control With Vantacor® Insect Control

What are Grasshoppers?

Grasshoppers feed on grasses and weeds, and often move to cultivated crops. Their populations vary year to year, but their damage is likely to be the highest in dry years. They feed on any aboveground part of the corn plant at any growth stage, and damage is usually seen first on the outer edges of a field.

Timing:

Grasshoppers lay eggs below the soil surface in late summer or early fall. The pods of eggs, consisting of 20 to 100 eggs, then overwinter. Nymphs emerge from the ground in May or June and take up to 60 days to become full adults. Fields should be monitored in spring and early summer for young grasshoppers that may feed on crops as they grow.

Identification:

There are over 100 different grasshopper species in the United States, so color varies widely. However, most common species are brown or gray green, with prominent heads and distinct hind legs.
