The shoot fly is a significant pest that attacks crops during the seedling or early growth stages, particularly in maize and sorghum. The larvae bore into the leaf sheaths and consume the growing point, causing "dead heart" symptoms that can lead to plant death or stunted growth with excessive tillering.
