Rhinoceros beetle
Further Information
Click to open/close
The rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is a major and highly destructive pest affecting oil palm plantations, particularly young, immature palms. Adult beetles damage the palms by boring into the growing point (spear leaf) and unexpanded fronds, resulting in characteristic "V-shaped" or triangular cut patterns when the leaves unfold. Severe infestations can destroy the apical meristem and kill the palm.
