Sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) is a major fungal disease in rice and maize crops affecting the leaf sheaths. Symptoms begin as greenish-gray water-soaked spots on the sheaths near the waterline, expanding into oval lesions with brown margins and grayish centers resembling a snake-skin pattern. Severe infection causes sheath rot, leaf desiccation, lodging, and significant empty-grain yield loss.
