Downy mildew (Peronosclerospora maydis) is a major systemic disease affecting maize (corn) caused by an oomycete pathogen. It infects young seedlings, producing characteristic white to yellowish chlorotic streaks running parallel along the leaves, stunted plant growth, and malformed or grainless ears, leading to total crop failure in severe cases.
