News Release: FMC Fungicide Can be Applied Via Pressurized Irrigation System to Manage Trunk Disease Complex in Grapes and Tree Nuts

Rhyme® fungicide's 2(ee) recommendation offers simple and effective method to manage yield-robbing grapevine trunk diseases and wood canker diseases in California.

PHILADELPHIA, January 22, 2020 – There is a new and convenient way to manage grapevine trunk diseases and wood canker diseases in California vineyards and tree nut orchards. FMC has issued a 2(ee) recommendation to apply Rhyme® fungicide via drip irrigation for systemic disease management of trunk diseases in grapes and tree nuts including almonds and walnuts.

Novel Inside-Out, Residual Protection

Rhyme fungicide is the most systemic and longest lasting FRAC Group 3 fungicide on the market. Applied via chemigation, Rhyme fungicide protects plants from the inside out, preserving yields and extending the productive life of vineyards and orchards. When applied via chemigation, the active ingredient in Rhyme fungicide is taken up by the plant’s roots and moves upward through the xylem to provide both internal and foliar disease protection. Rhyme fungicide is the only fungicide labeled for application through pressurized irrigation systems to control the trunk disease complex in tree nuts and grapes as well as powdery mildew in grapes.

“Trunk diseases are widespread and highly destructive,” says Issa Qandah, FMC technical service manager for California. “They lead to the decline and eventual death of grapevines and, in the case of tree nuts, dieback of shoots and buds and declining tree health. Yield losses of 20% and more are not uncommon.”

Recent trials by the University of California and FMC have found Rhyme fungicide controls a complex of pathogens responsible for destruction of the xylem tissue, which transports water and nutrients through the plant. Rhyme fungicide has been found to inhibit the growth of key fungi involved with trunk diseases including Botryosphaeria dothidea, Neofusicoccum parvum, Eutypalata and Phomopsis. Neofusicoccum parvum is one of the most aggressive causal agents of Botryosphaeria dieback in both grapes and tree nuts.

“Applying Rhyme® fungicide via chemigation at root flush in spring and fall maximizes wood disease management and provides protection prior to pruning,” says Qandah. “Application and labor costs are also reduced compared to foliar or wound protectant treatments. Rhyme fungicide, when used as part of a long-term management program, can add years of productive life to infected vineyards and orchards.”

Additional 2(ee) recommendation expands foliar use in walnuts

In addition to the aforementioned 2(ee) chemigation recommendation, FMC has also issued a 2(ee) recommendation for foliar applications of Rhyme fungicide for management of Botryosphaeria panicle and shoot blight, and Phomopsis canker in walnuts, including black and English (Persian) walnuts.
